My mom just bought this today and I helped her set it up. Im already thinking about buying one, even though I already have a laser MFC at home. Its that good. The setup is easy, the quality is good, and the price is right.
1. Setup on PC, Mac, and network
It was super easy. HP includes the usual install CD, but you dont need it on PC; they put the files on the machine, and they show up when you connect the USB cable the same way a USB flash drive would, though this doesnt work on Mac. Just follow the instructions; everything is straightforward.
If you want to use it over the network, connect it to your router, you still need to connect it via USB first. Before too long, the installation program tells you to disconnect the USB cable, and you dont need to connect it via USB any further. So if you have a USB cable that you can use temporarily, you dont need to buy another just for the printer to use it over the network.
If you havent yet connected the networking cable from the printer to the router, itll tell you when to connect it, and the router and printer should talk to each other without any difficulty. My moms router is a modem/router/wifi hub combo from the Paleozoic Era, issued by a very low-tech rural DSL provider, and it worked just fine. I expected the networking part to be hard, and it was actually fairly easy. If everything Ive written so far makes sense, you probably know enough to set this up on the network.
Once its set up on one computer and on the network, use the driver CD to install the drivers on any other computers on your network; this is even easier. Read more

My wife and I are very pleased with this printer.
Its quiet, fast for our needs and very well built. It connects directly to our home network, which means I dont have to turn my wifes computer or vice versa on to print. Perfect printer for a home office for a great price. Replacing our old inkjet printer for a laser was by far the best decision we could have made.
My wife needed a copier she has a home office and our inkjet was acting funny for the last few weeks. We had been spending every six weeks in ink cartridges and were getting tired of it. So we looked into laser printers and figured out that if we spent twice as much upfront in a laser printer, in the long run we were going to save money. Every one told us that bar Xerox incredibly expensive, HP made the best printers. We compared Canon, Brother and HP BW laser printers and found that the m1212nf was the best deal: flat bed, automatic feeder for when you need to copy a bunch of single pages, and a price tag comparable to lesser quality printers.
Truly plug-and-play for a Vista computer my wifes, you dont even need a CD since the drivers are stored IN the printer. Painless installation for Linux Ubuntu 10.4, as well. You just need to download HPLIPs latest version from HPs website. It is that easy.
The printer is connected through an Ethernet cable to our LAN, and I can print wirelessly over WiFi, no need to turn my wifes computer on.
A flat bed cum auto feeder gives you the greatest flexibility possible to scan and copy documents.
Its footprint is a little big, but this is a multifunction device, so what are you going to do? It sits quite nicely over one of those small file cabinets.
Overall is a well built piece of equipment: its sturdy and it works as intended. Havent tried the fax, its no longer the 1990s!

Ive had this printer for roughly a month now, having replaced an older HP Laserjet 1300 series printer. Im very happy with its performance thus far. Set up on my Mac was easy enough download the latest driver package from the HP site, print quality is excellent and very fast, copier function is actually faster and better than I hoped it would be, and fax performance is great. Document feeder works pretty well, too. My only gripes are 1 the copier lid isnt hinged, so copying thick books is a bit awkward; and 2 there is no secondary paper feed, so when I need to print an envelope I have to take all the paper out of the feed tray and adjust the paper holders, print the envelope, and then put it all back. All in all, though, Id buy it again in a heartbeat.

I purchased this printer with the impression that claiming Mac OSX compatibility means that it is fully recognized and usable by the OS. However, that is not the case for OSX v10.6.6 latest updates as of this writing.
Connected via USB to a Mac Pro tower. The device prints fine. Copies fine. I do not have a phone line to test fax. Have not tried network setup.
Scanning is a different story. Under OSX the only way to scan is with the included absolutely bare bones basic HP Scan software. This software has no options besides resolution you wish to scan in and if you would like to save as jpg, pdf or email it no TIFF. OSX does not recognize this device as a scanner. This means any programs such as the OSX built in Image Capture, Preview, or 3rd party programs like VueScan can not be used. This is a complete disappointment since my sole reason for getting a multifunction printer is to have built in scanner functionality. HP should not be advertising these devices as OSX compatible if they work like this.
Even worse three different HP phone support techs claimed it should be recognized by the OS and had it working in a lab. One was very unpleasant and not willing to do anything to help. Even when I said you are losing a customer for not trying to help with this situation. These claims were totally rebuked by an HP representative answering my post in their online support forum. This individual verified my findings stating there was no appropriate driver for OSX and only the HP Scan software could be used for this model printer. Verified same behavior on 2 Mac machines.
I believe Apple has included some updates that now allow this printer to natively scan on OSX. I am currently running latest 10.8. Read more

Ive connected a LOT of devices to a LOT of computers, and for such a complicated device, this was ridiculously easy. Major kudos to HPs software team.
Print and copy quality are great. Thats a given with a laser printer, I suppose. Its only black-and-white, but if you dont need color, if you print your photos at the pharmacy or have a separate color printer, a photo-quality inkjet printer, youre good.
The scanning quality is also very good. 300x300 pixel black-and-white scans of sheet-fed documents make great PDFs. I also did a 1200x1200 pixel color scan of an old sports card, and its quite sharp. Im not somebody who works with images for a living, but unless you are or are a very serious hobbyist, this scanner should suit your needs.
I wasnt able to get the standard Mac software Image Capture to operate the scanner that software is pretty weak anyway, but the HP Director software works well on Mac genuinely shocked and PC.
My one complaint about using the HP software for scanning is that it doesnt let you preview-and-crop. If you need cropping, if youre scanning in 4x6 photos, youll need to do that with another program. You probably already have something on your computer that will do this, but if not, you can download GIMP free open source program or buy something cheap and simple to crop, correct color, etc.
We havent tried the fax yet.
At the list price, this is a steal. Even lower-quality manufacturers you know who they are are charging similar prices for laser MFCs with no networking capability.
If youve never bought a laser printer, the toner cost currently on the HP website at 68 for a cartridge that yields about 1600 pages might be a turnoff, but on a per-page basis, its probably somewhat-to-much cheaper than the inkjet youre using or considering. The overall build quality and durability of laser printers is also much better, so your total cost of ownership cost of printer ink/toner, divided by pages printed before the device dies is likely much lower.
In short, this printer is a winner, at least based on initial quality.

We bought this printer for our HR department. After as little as 30 days of use and 40% of the toner left the printer started to leave streaks of the page fadedunprinted. Taking the toner cartridge out and putting back in would fix it for 20 more pages then it would occur again. Replacing the toner with a genuine HP toner would fix the problem for another 3 weeks then we would see the same issue when the toner reached 30 to 40 % remaining. We called hp and they agreed it was defective, sent us a new one, and guess what, same thing started happening on a brand new one. I would not recommend for a office environment where the load is moderate, you will burn though toner fast because you have to replace the toner when it still has 40% left. We ended up ditching the printer and had to put a Xerox in for the department.

The native Apple Preview application now allows an option to directly import from scanner and works fine with the HP M1212nf. Ill upgrade this to a 4 star rating, but it sure took long enough to get all the capabilities!

For everyday home use, this is plenty sufficient. You can print, scan multiple pages to PDF, copy, even fax if you still do that. No, there isnt a USB-B cable in the box, nor a CAT-5 network cable. Who doesnt have a drawer full of cables these days?
Pros: good print quality, good scan quality, no dried-up ink to replace every 6 months, initial install very simple.
Network setup was a little touch and go, but I made it work in about 20 minutes. Having Windows 7 and a home network is a plus.

We bought this printer for our HR department. After as little as 30 days of use and 40% of the toner left the printer started to leave streaks of the page fadedunprinted. Taking the toner cartridge out and putting back in would fix it for 20 more pages then it would occur again. Replacing the toner with a genuine HP toner would fix the problem for another 3 weeks then we would see the same issue when the toner reached 30 to 40 % remaining. We called hp and they agreed it was defective, sent us a new one, and guess what, same thing started happening on a brand new one. I would not recommend for a office environment where the load is moderate, you will burn though toner fast because you have to replace the toner when it still has 40% left. We ended up ditching the printer and had to put a Xerox in for the department.

The unit is slower than rated by most reviewers, no big surprise.
Print and scan quality are adequate.
The document feeder jams occasionally but that is de rigeur at this price point.
Sadly, the software renders this machine useless utter than for basic functions:
it will not scan at less than 300 dpi; HP suggested buying third party software! If you have to scan multiple letter size documents why would you want or need files that are nearly half a megabyte each at the default and non-adjustable jpeg setting.
it will not scan a multipage document and save it in a single file. The software on my 8 year old inkjet Lexmark does this but HP cannot bother to build this into their software. Again HP recommends third party software.
I can tell you for certain that the scanner does not work with Irfanview any better than it does with HPs own horrible software.
Unless you have basic needs and do not care or understand about file sizes and dpi maybe this unit will work for you.

I would not recommend this machine. The scanner function is terrible. Both software and hardware. Paper feeder works - sometimes. Sometimes it will only take the first sheet sometimes none at all. The scanner function will sometimes scan all of the document. Sometimes it wont. Sometimes the scan will be readable, sometimes it is not. Sometimes it will scan all of the text on a page sometimes it wont. Will scan black on a page but not blue.
After all this time you would think that HP could get this right. We are a small business and the scan function is key for us.
I guess it deserves one star because it does print.

The HP LaserJet M1212nf MFP installed easily and rapidly. All of the functions printing, scanning, copying worked immediately. Faxing, however, did not completely work after installation and configuration. Using HPs fax-back website, I determined that the machine could send a fax okay, but not receive a fax. The problem was that the fax telephone line was shared with an answering machine. The fax component of the M1212nf would not take control of the line when the fax sender presented the fax tones after the answering machine picked up. The user manual for the M1212nf clearly states that it should do that when the machine is configured to work on the same line as an answering machine. Eventually, I resolved the problem by going to the HP support website and downloading the latest firmware for the M1212nf. The old firmware was 6 months old. One of the published problems fixed by the new firmware was an inability to receive faxes when the fax line was shared with an answering machine. Once the new firmware was installed very easy to do, the fax component could send and receive faxes without any problems. If one purchases this machine, I recommend updating the firmware immediately after the installation process. Now that everything works, Im pleased with the purchase and the price I paid.

I purchased this printer so I could add Airprint to my home network. Since I already had a WiFi network and this printer was going to sit close to the router, I did not need to get a WiFi enabled printer. All I had to do was install the printer and plug it into my wired network. I did run into one problem that I had to download the latest printer firmware before Airprint would work.
To download the latest firmware from HP, login to the printer via the browser and the IP address of the printer. you can get the IP address by looking on the printer display Go to the Status tab and click on the network summary. Make sure the Firmware datecode 20120206. If it does not equal this and Airprint is not working, click on the Support button and click on product support. Navigate to the firmware called - 2012-02-17, Version:20120206, 5.44M and download. Follow the instructions to update the printer.
After the firmware update Airprint worked perfect and the printer is very fast. This is a great printer for the price!

10. Принтер глючит: печатает две страницы, а потом зависает, пишет инициализация и не выходит в готовность, usb вход вырван - надо отремонтировать плату форматера или заменить целиком на новую - такой ремонт стоит от 4000 рублей.
